I finally did what has been pending for a long time. I visited Dubai.
For those who know me personally, or even just from my online persona, you might have guessed that I am not usually drawn to the big city life. BUT: I live in a GCC country within driving range of Dubai, so my curiosity won and I did a trip over Eid al Adha. Also so that you do not have to 😉
First of all photographically: It sure is a captivating city with all its skyscrapers and the fancy architecture. A very hard one to capture on camera though. The lack of space to move around in the city and the huge highways make it almost impossible to find perspectives to take pictures of the buildings (unless you have access to one of the other high buildings of course).
On the other hand, this was of course a perfect exercise to make the best of it and to use the 14mm GM lens from Sony for something other than night skies. Unfortunately it was not only super hot outside – yes I know, who would go to Dubai during summer, right? – it was also very hazy, so pictures from afar were not an option either.
The one building that really stands out is not one of the skyscrapers though. It is the museum of the future. This very creativly shaped building covered in arabic calligraphy (who can decipher something?) is a treat to see during the night.
So to conclude: Dubai sure has a lot to offer and makes for an amazing weekend. I am still happy to get back to the outdoors though. Talk to you all soon!
Oh and for those who want to know where the best spot is for a picture of the skyline: It is Dubai Creek Harbour. Unfortunately we did not have nice sunsets because of the dust, but the mood was still amazing. And if you do not visit during peak summer you might get the setting sun exactly behind downtown – good luck!
